The geographical and linguistic understanding of the Balkan languages. The Balkan Language Union (Sprachbund). Center and Periphery on the horizontal (synchronic) axis - linguistic continuity, areas of intensive language contact. Mosaic patterns of language interaction: language islands on the vertical (diachronic) axis. The incidence of Balkanisms (common Balkan linguistic features) in the center and the periphery.
