The History of Polish Language as a Research Problem in the Work of a Language Historian

Summary/Abstract: The article raises the essential for studies of Polish diachronic linguistics problem of the object of description, capacity and methodology of research. It presents the approaches of Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, Tadeusz Milewski, Zenon Klemensiewicz, Irena Bajerowa and recent concepts referring to structural interpretation of the history of language, created by the latter one. The greatest emphasis falls on the issues concerning the evolution of linguistic system in the aspect of internal and external language history and historical process of Polish language optimization. Another crucial issue concerns major object-situation linguistic variants, or else, the so-called political, religious, educational and civilization registers.
