Summary/Abstract: The problem is considered in the context of tracing the development of demographic thought and scientific knowledge on population in Bulgaria. The author considers first the significance of the appearance of demographic statistics as a basis for first analyses of the Bulgarian population and formulation of laws for its change by Bulgarian authors. At first the description traces the appearance of demographic statistics and analyses for the Bulgarian population performed by the Turkish empire where the Bulgarian lands were included before the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878. A deserved attention Is attributed to European travellers and researchers who have visited the Bulgaran lands before the Liberation and have published statistical data and information for the Bulgarian population. It is shown how these data were used in the liberation struggle against the Turkish empire, along with the research on Bulgarians and Bulgarian lands on the eve of the Liberation, prepared by the Chief commandment of the Russian army during the Russian-Turkish war in 1877-1878.
