Summary/Abstract: This paper is aimed at discussing the mythical frame of the Portuguese imaginary, having as a starting point Luís de Camões’ and Fernando Pessoa’s writings. We argue that the characteristics of our people are present in the most relevant poems of the Portuguese culture: Os Lusíadas (1572), by Luís de Camões and Mensagem, by Fernando Pessoa (1934). These poems allowed us to establish three mythical subjects: the messianic subject, understood as waiting for the hidden saviour king that will come to save us; love, the nostalgic desire of the impossible; and saudade, the mixture of solitude, nostalgia and sadness that gives anima to the Portuguese soul.
