Summary/Abstract: Europe has several meanings, as the case of the Hungarian political discourse shows, but the discourses of European politicians and the academic élite offer only a narrow sense of identity, the central notion of the discourse on the nature of Europe. The construction of a common European political horizon needs not only a proclamation of the existence and importance of the European subject, but it is necessary to hear and at least partially understand their voice. This voice is not a univocal one; there cannot be found a common un questionable experience of being European. In the context of the Hungarian discourse theory identity refers not only to the political character of identity cons truction and identification and the demand for a democratic identity formation, as is the case in the Essex school of discourse theory. As being at the intersection of intellectual courses we also apply the results of the discourse studies oriented to hermeneutics and conceptual history which concentrate rather on the contextual validity of the elements which appears in the dis course than on the possible transformation of a discursively given situation. This theoretical complexity reveals the urgent need to analyse those discourses which have no universal meanings and validity by nature, because these politically understandable textual formations belong to the primary experience of those who live in, use and transform this language as well.
