Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author explores concepts, practices, and political formations of secularism indicating main historical changes that shaped secular sensibilities and attitudes in modern West and Middle East. Secular cannot be considered what comes after religion, or what belongs to the domain of rational. It is a category with a very complex history, closely connected with main premises of modernity, democracy, and concept of human rights.
