Summary/Abstract: Much has been written about Ban’ya Natsuishi’s poetry and its connection with surrealism, as well as about the radical change in the point of view of the haiku poet who turns his gaze towards internal reality and legitimizes it as no less important than that which surrounds him. An important factor in this change is Ban’ya’s decision to not use seasonal words as a structurally defining factor in haiku and his replacement of them with keywords. Ban’ya believes that many poets confuse the concept of “reality“ with “fact“ and that, in fact, reality can include imaginary and the unreal. He speaks of “the totality of human reality“ (A Future Waterfall, p. 67). And while the surrealism in Ban’ya’s works is merely the tip of the iceberg that is the deep change he is bringing about in haiku poetry, I believe that there is also a more important yet more difficult to notice aspect: existentialism.
