Summary/Abstract: The model which is here offered of traditional Muslim civilization is basically an attempt to fuse Ibn Khaldun’s political sociology with David Hume’s oscillation theory of religion. Whereas Hume’s theory is far too psychologistic and not wholly coherent, one could never accuse Ibn Khaldun, the greatest sociologist of Islam, of locating the key factors in the individual human heart. There are important social factors, the requirements of the types of social organization within which men find themselves. Social organization is not indifferent to religious style. In comparison with other monotheistic religions, Islam has a greater social pervasiveness.
