Summary/Abstract: Bringing up a high quality cadre of Muslim clerics and scholars has been the first priority of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina for centuries. This paper presents the issue of Islamic education through five historical periods marked by different types of state and political regimes: Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian imperial rule, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Socialist Yugoslavia and the present time of democratic transitions. In the current post-war period the Islamic Community has been actively engaged in the promotion of the interreligious dialogue and understanding, guided by some most prominent ulama and inspired by a long tradition of tolerant religious teaching.
