Summary/Abstract: A dialogue between Jankélévitch, Derrida and Ricoeur The evils of industrial production in the twentieth century initiated a multitude of philosophical discussions and one of these revolves around the question of capabilities, needs, meaning and sense of forgiveness. The ideas of three selected philosophers who have contributed significantly to debating this question reveal the complexity, difficulty, and practical (im) possibility of the phenomenon of forgiveness. Jankélévitch’s rejection of the possibility of forgiveness in the face of monstrous crimes, the kind of crimes from which the human mind is bound to recoil, proved to be theoretically fruitful. In dialogue with him, Derrida proposes a complete reversal of Jankélévitch’s thesis, stating that crimes of that scale are the very reason for the existence of forgiveness; in other words, the reason for forgiveness is that which is unforgivable. Finally, Ricoeur suggests a kind of reconciliatory solution, arguing that forgiveness is diffi cult, but not impossible. To forgive does not mean to forget, but “to correct the past”; to forgive means to revise memory and use memory critically in order to exit from the past that does not want to let you go.
