Employment in Polish manufacturing industry under structural change

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to study the impact of the sectoral structure of employment on its volume in the Polish manufacturing industry during the economic slowdown at the turn of the century and at the end of the previous decade, during the global financial crisis. The Hodrick-Prescott filter and the Lilien (1982) and Rissman (1997) indexes were used to analyze the correlation between the intensity of structural changes and the employment dynamics in the manufacturing industry in 1998– 2013. The findings suggest that structural changes were more intensive at the turn of the century than at the end of 2000s, and also affected employmentmore strongly. During the recent slowdown,the impact of the structural factor was lower because the share of industries reducing employment due to structural factors was smaller.
