Summary/Abstract: The Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu preserves the German-language lecture notes written by Wilhelm Julius Moritz, a student of theology, from 1828–1829 at the lectures of the Estonian language by Johann Samuel Friedrich Boubrig, the lecturer of Estonian. The lectureship of Estonian was established at the University of Tartu in 1803. The task of the lecturer was teaching Estonian to German-speaking students – the future pastors. Boubrig worked as a lecturer from 1826–1837. Using Moritz’ lecture notes, the article analyses the content of Boubrig’s teaching, the literature used by him and his methods of teaching. Boubrig’s teaching was centred on theory and grammar. The language of tuition was German. While teaching Estonian grammar and vocabulary, Boubrig relied on August Wilhelm Hupel’s book Ehstnische Sprachlehre für die beyden Hauptdialekte, den revalschen und dörptschen, nebst einem vollständigen ehstnischen Wörterbuche (1818), articles by different authors from the journal Beiträge zur genauern Kenntniss der ehstnischen Sprache (published from 1813–1832), and other pertinent sources. The students also received a good overview of the ongoing reform of the Estonian written language. The lecturer acquainted the students with newer theoretical literature on the kindred languages of Estonian – Finnish and Hungarian. As for the practical command of Estonian, most probably, the students had to acquire it themselves, ex usu.
