Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the children who entered professional foster care in Bistriţa-Năsăud county, from 1998 to 2012. More than half of the children (n=264; 54.7%) have never left the protection system. The aim of the research is to identify the characteristics of the children and of their birth family that can be seen as predictors to adoption or reunification. Our study is a descriptive one and it relies on a life-course approach using Kaplan-Meier estimates. The conclusions of the study shows that the adoption is more probable for girls than for boys, for Romanian than for Roma, for children without disabilities and for those children who are not in contact with their family. Reunification is more probable for children who are in contact with their families of origin, for children without disabilities and for families without economic difficulties.
