Summary/Abstract: The author's interests are directed to the problems of family and the development of family kinship relations in the period from XIX c. to the 40s of the XX c. The investigation particularly of the population of North-West Bulgaria is motivated by the existence of archaic forms of social organization, preserved in this region up to the middle of XX c. The structure of the so-called "complex compound households" is thoroughly examined; the variants, differing from its classical forms are shown; the stages of development are shown as well. The author underlines the distribution of labour obligations in the family, on the rights of inheritance, on kinds of adoption, on the organization of the houses. Here are viewed also the existing in North-West Bulgaria after the Liberation forms of kinship organization — clan, family, mahalla; the prohibitions for marriage; kinship denominations. All these, together with the data about the historical development and the geographic situation of the region, creates grounds to define the traditional family organization in North-West Bulgaria , the most archaic type of Bulgarian family.
