Summary/Abstract: The article looks at the role of the Antes as defenders of the Scythian limes based on the treaty they concluded with Justinian I in 545/46 and the development of the alliance between the two sides until the beginning of the seventh century. Considering the maintenance of the title Anticus by the Byzantine emperors up to 612, the suggestion is made that the dissolution of the antic hegemony coincides with the collapse of the Scythian limes in c. 614/15.
