Summary/Abstract: The Treaty on the functioning of European Union presents in art. 49 some of the main characteristics concerning the right of residence and the coordination of social security sytems. The main characteristics of the right of residence are: installation in a Member State with permanent character; the key to business development. In this case there should be no discrimination between nationals belonging to Member States. Coordination of social security systems. The lack of harmonization of the scope of social security has led to a multitude of national regimes of the Member States and to many legislative gaps. Therefore, the European institutions and some governments are struggling to coordinate the most efficient of these systems.
