Summary/Abstract: T. G. Masaryk, the first president of the democratic Czechoslovak Republic (1918 – 1938) was known for his just attitude towards Czech Jews. He expressed his ideas on various places in his studies and articles. For them he was often criticized by a big part of Czech society including students, press, nationalists and the Catholic Church. This article deals with Masaryk’s writing on the subject, his part in the Hilsner Affair, the role and position of the Jewry in the first Czechoslovak Republic, famous Czech Jewish intellectuals, whom Masaryk frequently met, and his visit to Palestine in 1927.
