Summary/Abstract: Eva Klímová: MOOD IN ITALIAN BETWEEN THE MORPHOLOGICAL FORM AND FUNCTION The article deals with the distinction between the form and the function of mood, observing it as a morphological category on the one hand and as a syntactical category on the other hand. The Italian indicative, conditional, subjunctive and imperative, and their English and Czech counterparts, are considered within modal schemes of different clause types with the aim of demonstrating their function as the main indicator of sentence modality in the broadest sense of the word. Besides the morphological and the syntactical mood, the terms "analytical mood" and "functional mood" are introduced. The term "analytical mood" is used to indicate different analytical forms that, along with the morphological mood, may express epistemic and deontic necessity and possibility. As a result, a list of morphological, syntactical and functional moods is proposed with a view to demonstrating the polyfunctionality of the Italian verbal mood.
