Summary/Abstract: The author of this article, who was Polish ambassador to the USA in 1994-2000, presents Poland's efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the events behind the scenes that led to the symbolic liquidation of the Yalta order. He also conducts an analysis of the important factors that influenced this process. The author's observation point – Washington – lets him emphasize the American point of view and allows the reader to take a look at the efforts made by Polish diplomacy and the reception and effects of these efforts in the USA against the background of the entire decision making process connected with NATO enlargement. Without the USA's strong leadership and the evolution of its position from prudent interest to deep involvement, NATO enlargement would be unthinkable. The article presents one of the greatest successes of Polish diplomacy – a rare example of victory of justice over history – [this is sheer surrealism to the western reader] from the perspective of an observer at the center of events.
