Summary/Abstract: The study shows the impact the years of First World War had on the world’s leading position of Europe and on the European idea. Reconsidering the established in the scientific literature assumption, that the World War is a victory of nationalism that buried the idea of Europeanism, the author maintains the thesis, that the war is actually defeat for nationalism which proves the correctness of Europeanism. A significant place is assigned to the new, post-war ideas for Europe, especially the arising and the development of organized, mass Pan-European movement. In that context is studied the French idea for creating .European federal alliance.. An analysis is made on the reasons that prevented the realization of Europeanism in the political practice of the Old Continent in the interwar period. Special notice is paid on the fascist’s attitude toward the European idea and its evolution - from open rejection, to attempt to exploit its popularity for creating “real, new European order”, especially in the years of the Second World War. In that aspect the European point of view of the collaborationist and the leaders of the anti-fascist resistance is studied. The final part of the study shows the struggle of the devastated, humiliated and divided Europe to restore itself, and the general conviction in the common future for all nations that inhabit the continent.
