Summary/Abstract: An attempt has been made in this article to follow the principal stages in the development of culture in Bulgarian towns and to shed light on certain of its main features on the basis of the garments worn by town-dwellers. There were favourable prerequisites for the development of these garments, viz., the very old tradition of town culture in the ethnic territory inhabited by the Bulgarians, the rich heritage of ethnic components which took part in the formation of the Bulgarian nationality and the independent creativity of the Bulgarian working people in the Middle Ages. The stability of town garments in the period of Ottoman domination is explained by the striving to preserve ethnic specifics. The formation of the garments worn in Bulgarian towns during the National Revival period is studied, as it resulted from a synthesis of local national traditions and some of the finest and most progressive achievements of European fashions in that period. The author indicates the part played by factors of different kinds in creating the Bulgarian style of dressing during the National Revival. The influence of town garments on those worn in the villages is studied. The sharp delimitation of town and village wear in the period of Bulgaria's capitalist development is also studied and so is the restoration of relations between them in the building up of Bulgarian socialist culture.
