Summary/Abstract: In his paper the Author notes that the pontificate of John Paul II has resulted in a large number of Pope's statements about university. They differ in their nature. Some statements were formulated because of his office and were directed to Catholic universities in the form of the apostolic constitution, other speeches were directed to scholars and were presented during Holy Father's numerous trips. Among them were also fragments of homilies delivered during celebrations for the inauguration of the academic year. Speaking about university, John Paul II has often stressed his personal, emotional relationship with the university. The author presents quotes from various speeches by the Pope. These quotes concern following issues: the mission of university; the problem of university autonomy; freedom of scientific research; university as a place of formation of the “whole man”; the position of university towards scientific progress; Catholic scientists at the university as successors and witnesses of Christ; the need of university to survive as the task of scholars.
