Summary/Abstract: The article discusses poetics and the field of meanings of the latest writings of Vytautas Martinkus. The application of such genre definitions as an essayistic story, autobiography and nonfiction to the works "A dog, which stopped barking" and "Optical illusion, or how to learn painting a dream" (Dog's node, 2006) has been also considered. New works of Martinkus are regarded as the writer's first try at artistically thinking over the years of Independence, their social and existential upheaval which had a particular influence over the human life and identity. Coordination of different speeches and genres, intertextuality, an attitude of the main character and its relationship with the environment and itself when seeking to define own identity allow attributing these essayistic stories to the paradigm of postmodernism.
