Summary/Abstract: Gender stereotypes in the novel by Liūne Janušytė The Mis take ofProof(1938) are presented in the article. Feminist criticism helps to disseminate stereotypes. The aim of the article is to show how the writer tries to deny the social parts of sexes, the schematized attitude towards sex. The deniai of woman's identification with the passiveness, obedience is emphasized. "Masculinity" and "femininity" in the space of the novel seem to loose its meaning: a woman here is shown not only in the family, but actively participating in the social life as well. It is stated in the conclusions, that in the novel The Mistake of Proof by Janušytė the other tendencies of the stereotypes of sexes show up: the pair, which makes the main binary opposition -active man/passive woman exchanges its places. It influences the changed variation of other stereotypes as well: woman's sexuality, is not stressed, as it used to be, by the demonstration of perfect body and beautiful appearance; love for a woman is only a game, an exotic adventure.
