Summary/Abstract: The attitude of the government of the Independent State of Croatia toward the Italian occupation and annexation of one part of the Croatian littoral (May 1941 to September 1943) is impossible to analyze as a whole without looking at the fashion in which the “directed press” of Croatia during this period depicted the image of the future of these lands in domestic and foreign public opinion. In this regard, this article discusses the treatment of Adriatic themes in the key Croatian daily published in Zagreb, Hrvatski narod, to the capitulation of Italy in September 1943. The author likewise comes to the conclusion that Croatian journalism, in the context of numerous anti-Italian and “irredentist” comments made by Croatian state functionaries and military officers, represented one of the main factors which motivated Italian diplomats and military personnel to attempt a deeper political, economic, and territorial encroachment in Croatia. While antipathy to Italy grew in Croatia, the Italians correctly judged Croatia to be a disloyal ally, unwilling to accept that it was Italian imperialism which impaired a genuine alliance.
