Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the possibilities of action research of teachers. Action research is considered a methodological tool offered to teachers for conducting their own research which results in the change of their instructional practice. Although qualitative methodology is predominant in action research, it does not mean that it should not be governed by principles of planned and systematic investigation and should not take into account the criteria of validity and reliability. The article addresses some fundamental dilemmas occurring in teachers’ research, particularly as concerns the publication of research results and their dissemination to a critical professional audience. The paper is based on the thesis that teachers – mostly due to their limited methodological expertise – only rarely carry out action research projects and, consequently, do not exploit the potential that this type of research has for the improvement of their everyday practice.
