Summary/Abstract: In a unitary historical and cultural conception, the semantic sphere of the notion press includes more than the formal common meaning of totality of journals and periodicals, more than the technological meaning of printing machine, it also involves the essential cultural meaning of content, of journalistic and periodical literature. In a systematic research, literary species such as travel notes, feuilletons, reviews, articles, jokes, surrealist poetry, reportages, documentary literature, news, were created and spread mainly by the press and continue to constitute an indissoluble and invariable structure of the press. This study demonstrates the multivalent semantic sphere of the phrase „the press – source of inspiration for the literary history“ and presents its three historical and cultural meanings in the 19th century and in the early 20th century. From a historical point of view, press was even more than merely a source of inspiration for the literary history, it was an „institutional and social structure“ that played a major part in the social and historical evolution and determined a certain „literary history“, where writing, letters, information became essential means of individual and communitarian human accomplishment, of reproduction and development of society.
