SOME NOTES ON TWO ENGLISH SPATIAL ADJECTIVES AND THEIR ABSTRACT USE

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the distribution of two English synonymous spatial adjectives – wide and broad. It is argued that the notion of “boundary” known from cognitive linguistics (Lakoff 1987, Langacker 1987, Talmy 2000) is applicable not only to the distribution of the two adjectives with concrete nouns but also with abstract nouns. Data were retrieved from four corpora available on the ICAME CD ROM (LOB, FLOB, BROWN, FROWN) and from the BNC.
