Summary/Abstract: In order to fully exploit the export potential of Polish SMEs we need a sound export policy. Export assistance which is currently available for Polish small and medium enterprises comprises mechanisms which facilitate their access to foreign markets and international business knowledge as well as funds supporting their export strategies. Other assistance schemes such as investment or innovation oriented grants promote export indirectly, especially when they are addressed to exporters. Research conducted among Polish active exporters indicates that existing programs do not fully fulfill exporters’ expectations. On this basis we recommend that grants for participation in foreign trade shows should be granted more consistently and the access to these grants should be wider. Furthermore we recommend that the Paszport do eksportu program should not discriminate against active exporters as it does now. Finally stronger support for export outside Europe would be welcome.
