Summary/Abstract: The article covers the relations between the EU and African states from 1957 to 2010, when the 3rd EU – Africa Summit took place in Tripoli. The Treaty Establishing the European Community from 1957 was the first document of the European Community that mentioned a need for promoting social and economic growth of the overseas countries and territories. The intercontinental relations were evaluated. Conventions from Yaoundé, Lomé, then the Cotonou agreement were signed. In 2007 the Joint Africa – EU Strategy was adopted. For the time being three EU – Africa summits have been organized. The meetings took place in Cairo (2000), Lisbon (2007) and Tripoli (2010). The paper discusses the last summit in Tripoli. Nowadays Economic Partnership Agreements are negotiated with particular African regions. The next EU – Africa summit is to be organized in Brussels in 2013.
