Summary/Abstract: Taking international security as his point of reference, the author analyzes new areas and forms of supranational collaboration in space that have developed in recent years and especially since 2000. The number of scientifi c and technical, economic, and defence projects involving both European and transatlantic partners is constantly increasing. Russia, the Ukraine, the USA, and Canada have collaborated in civilian projects. Asia is represented in this area by China, Japan and India. Against this background and with especial reference to Europe and the United States, the author discusses the basic characteristics of space policy and law and their potential future development. He presents key current issues and new problems relating to the evolution of contemporary space law along with selected legal aspects of international disputes, especially those connected with the growing commercialization of economic and service activities in space and with ensuring safety in space. Legislative, institutional and technical initiatives to resolve these problems are also discussed.
