Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a problem of formation of new understanding of emotions and its use in the strategies of religion and the state, in the light of formation of modern civil identity. The attention is paid to the Serbian nation in Habsburg monarchy, where a new consciousness about an individual, his individual and collective identity, was being formed during 18th and 19th century under the influence of religious and state reforms. Upbringing of an individual and uprising of his emotional consciousness became an instrument of influence to the individual, who was being organized institutionally both as a believer and a liege. Under the influence of Christianized neo-stoicism, the emotions were given ethical explanation, and with such a meaning, they were prescribed and propagated in the public and cultural sphere. The intention of newly-formed individuality to clearly define its identity and relation with himself and others was being built up to that process. The written culture of educated intellectuals, primarily sentimental literature had an important role in this process. It became the main educator of emotions and proponent of their liberation from manipulation by both religious and state reforms.
