Descriptive Connotations of Animals

Summary/Abstract: The linguistic picture of animals is mainly associated with anthropocentric perception of their "faults" and "merits". However, the article presents the level of descriptive connotations, which is focused on real features. The variety of the world of fauna turns out an inexhaustible source of metaphorical names (catachreses) for discovered or invented objects. The descriptive connotations of animals appear in colloquial style as well, to meet language users' expressive needs. Differentiation of means of connotation as regards legibility of derivation and degree of semantic motivation is another crucial point in the paper.
