Naming Children in a Globalizing World

Summary/Abstract: The contribution deals with social factors which can influence the first name selection. Attention is paid primarily to the role of the media, TV and the internet in particular. The author also outlines the current trends in the “West world”: it appears that in many countries a dominant role is played by international names. Then follows a comparison with the situation in East Europe and a list of the most frequent international names. In the close of the article some new opportunities of further research are outlined.
