Summary/Abstract: Even if there is no European regulation on denominations, the religious life is referred to in both the EU Treaty and The European Convention of Human Rights. A possible European model that would provide a common basis for dealing with the relations between the States and the denominations is impossible since, at the European level, religious freedom is guaranteed while the different aspects that characterize these relations are the responsibility of each member State of EU. One can notice, however, that the states have continuously diminished their interference in the inner life of the denominations, acknowledging their rights to autonomous organization and functioning, that constitutes the principle of denominational autonomy. The religious life is perceived as an important aspect of the public life, the public interest or usefulness character of the activities of the denominations being acknowledged.
