Summary/Abstract: Martin Sohberg (1839–1927) was one of the most popular folk authors of the 19th century. In 1865–1881 he published many small size chapbooks. The most popular of them were the series Eesti laulutooja ("Estonian song-bearer") and Eesti jututooja ("Estonian tale-bearer"), which included some traditional material as well. Judging by Jututooja, Martin Sohberg is a typical 19th-century author. The ten published issues of the Jututooja consist of translations, folktales and the author's own creations. This paper concentrates on the tales published in Eesti jututooja attempting to find out the extent to which, if any, the author has based on oral traditions, as well as to track the possible influence of those publications in recorded folktales.
