Summary/Abstract: The paper focusses on the aspects that form the regional identity of Banat residents, on how this identity is shaped through social interactions, as well as on the relationship between ethnic and regional identity. In this research I used the inductive analysis applied to the life story interviews from the archive of the Group of Cultural Anthropology and Oral History, from the Third Europe Foundation in Timişoara. The analysis of life story interviews given by individuals from different generations and ethnic groups emphasizes ethnic and regional prejudices and stereotypes. I have thus tried to show how the identity of the people from Banat is defined starting from childhood and what the role of primary and secondary socialization is in this process of shaping one’s identity. The analysis also reveals the patterns of intercultural socialization and the role of various social institutions in the development of interethnic tolerance.
