Summary/Abstract: Some children have difficulties and apparently can't sit still, pay attention or follow instructions and rules. If these problems persist and interfere seriously with schoolwork and family life the children may be diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder (ADD). Formerly known as minimal brain damage or dysfunction, hyperkinesias and hyperactivity, the disorder received its present official name about 20 years ago. The major symptoms are hyperactivity, impulsiveness and inattentiveness. The symptoms are now thought to continue into adulthood, taking new forms with age.
