Summary/Abstract: Miracles are organizing centres of meaning and narrative in etiological legend with specific features of their own. Unlike the fantastic in tales, they correlate directly with the surrounding reality and unlike the wonderful in stories of tradition, they are realized by folklore man, too. Acts of miracle in etiological legend constitute “precedents” because they serve as the beginning of engendered new quality in the world and set examples, “models” of behaviour. On the narrative level they are oriented towards a solution of the conflict between the dramatis personae and on normative level their aim is to restore the upset balance between norm and behaviour, or to create norm itself. In this sense, fateful acts in etiological legend are a means of overcoming contradictions and attaining the ideal, thought of as possible and actually existing in the distant age of legend, in the “prehistory” of the world.
