Summary/Abstract: Comparing Lithuanian and Spanish verbal tenses, it can appear that both languages have similar past tenses; however, for translators from Lithuanian into Spanish and from Spanish into Lithuanian it becomes obvious that the usage and meanings of past tenses differ significantly. The use of Spanish Simple Past, Imperfect and Present Perfect tenses is quite a challenge for Lithuanian speakers and translators, because in Lithuanian the Simple Past is much more widely used and it can often have imperfect and perfective meaning, whereas in Spanish the choice of past tenses is much stricter, and the Imperfect tense has far more varied meanings than the Lithuanian equivalent. Both speakers and translators have to take into account the context of speech, as well as the speaker’s intentions, so as to decide which tense is to be used in each case. Comparative grammar proves to be extremely useful for translators as well as linguists, because it makes it necessary to be well acquainted with the verbal structures of both languages.
