Summary/Abstract: Julien Green, words set free. A century of History and the history of a lifetime reflected in literary interviews. Although he was discreet and not involved in the great ideological and literary debates of his century, Julien Green did not refuse to communicate through the media. Our paper proposes an analysis of the Marcel Jullian’s interviews with the writer, published under the title of Julien Green en liberté... (1980). We highlight the kind of spiritual outlook and humour that Julien Green and his interlocutor shared as well as the spontaneity and vividness of these desultory conversations. The topics they tackle are varied and they get different degrees of attention; some of them are deeply connected with the writer’s inner self: faith, the obsession with the double, the mystery of creation, the taste for poetry, music; others are more concerned with History, with the future of humankind; others are basically reflections of everyday life.
