Summary/Abstract: In this article, firstly, in order to set the ground for the discussion of the empirical findings and to form the context within which the tyre factory, its workers and its union can be located, some of the important features of trade unionism in the Turkish workplace are described. Then, the findings of the case study analysis will be discussed by outlining the form and content of managerial strategies and by focusing on members’ aspirations and grievances about their union. Finally, in the light of managerial strategies and workers’ needs and expectations, policy debates in union head offices, local branch offices and, more importantly, on the shopfloor, are explored. Given that the workplace remains the crucible for any proper understanding of union strategy, particular attention is paid to the experiences of union representatives on the shopfloor (shop stewards).
