Summary/Abstract: Even though massive emigration from the Austro-Hungarian empire to overseas countries began in the 1880s, the Monarchy never had a consistent emigration policy or legislation. The effect of emigration being located in the private sphere was that most of the relevant documents were of a private character: within a family (correspondence); in societies for the recruitment and transportation of emigrants, or in private associations working with emigrants; and in the press. We have tried to establish the value of the latter as a source for research on emigration from the then Austrian province of Dalmatia on the basis of an analysis of the articles published in the most important papers at the time in the area, i.e: Narodni List (Zadar), Hrvatska riječ (Šibenik), Pučki list, Zadrugar and Sloboda (Split), and Crvena Hrvatska (Dubrovnik).
