Summary/Abstract: In his text Steiner puts up 7 principles for peace-building missions that he generates out of his experience with the United Nations in Bosnia-Hercegovina and Kosovo. He argues that, if the principles are being followed, UN-missions should have a very good chance to succeed with their work in the future: 1. there has to be a clear mandate for the mission, 2. corresponding financial means, 3. authority right from the beginning, 4. missions have to keep on learning, 5. they have to finish what they began, 6. they have to keep the right order (first guarantee justice and security, then democratisation), 7. they have to overcome bad habits, even if those are dealt with as „traditions“. Last but not least: missions have to master the skill of leaving one day and handing over the institutions, the power and future back to the people of the „guest society“.
