Keywords: Derivative synonyms; names of places.
Summary/Abstract: Derivative synonyms are the kind of synonyms which have the same root, different derivational affixes and very similar or identical lexical meanings. The article deals with stylistic peculiarities of derivative synonyms of the names of places (a special attention is given to the label the synonym has in the Dictionary of Modern Lithuanian published in 2000). In this work theoretical aspects of derivative synonyms are discussed on the basis of concreat material – derivative synonyms of the names of places (524 derivatives, 220 rows). The place is named according to the nature of things, qualities or actions. The main purpose of this work is to show that there are semantically and stylistically similar or identical derivative synonyms in this category of derivatives. The selected material is analysed according to methods of modern derivative analysis on the basis of which pairs and rows of derivative synonyms are formed. Substitution and counting methods are applied. Examples are analysed according to the descriptive analytical method. Derivative synonyms of the names of places may be of the same syntactical combinability, words of different intensity, used frequently or seldom, having (or not) stylistic labels, available for exchange. There are many derivative synonyms (190 rows) which do not differ stylistically – all the synonyms belong to neutral lexicon (ajerynas – ajerynė, baltuma – baltymė, maudykla – maudyklė – maudynė). Stylistically marked items of the synonym row are terms (įlanka, atbradas, rūdynas), vernacularisms – words used only in some dialect (beržytė, duburkis, karklytė, perenė), obsolete words (būvis, pardavykla, sankrova, viešpatija) and historisms (kunigaikštystė).
