Summary/Abstract: Zoltán Szabó (1912–1984) became known in Transylvania of interwar years mainly through his works in the field of sociography: A tardi helyzet/Th e Situation of Village Tard (1936), Cifra nyomorúság/Gaudy Misery (1938) and Szerelmes földrajz/In Love with Geography (1942). The press debate of that times regarding the travel diary entitled Magyarok Romániában/Hungarians in Romania, published recently by Pál Nagy (Mentor, 2001), reveals that Szabó visited in 1935, together with László Németh, Dezső Keresztury and Iván Boldizsár, the workshop of young Romanian sociologists from Bucharest. The author of the study does not focus this time on the sociographist Zoltán Szabó, but on the literary man, who succeeded to present the values of the Transylvanian literature. What determined the young arts student to be concerned with the problems Hungarians torn away from the rest of the nation? His revelations were determined by his studies on the right of philosophy, together with the search for spiritual partners able to objectively approach the problems of Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin. Due to his capacity of orientation and ability to see the essentials, Péter Cseke places Zoltán Szabó besides some great names of Hungarian literature: Aladár Kuncz and László Németh.
