Summary/Abstract: Following a short historiographical presentation, the first part of the study outlines a brief history of the Reformed Diocese of Gurghiu (Görgény). After a short introduction about the medieval ecclesiastical structure of the former Archdeaconry of Ózd, it presents its disintegration on ethnic and confessional grunds in the time of the Reformation. In the 16th century the Hungarian parishes adhered to the Reformed Diocese of Mureş (Maros), but in 1641 those from the territory of Turda (Turda) and Cluj (Kolozs) counties have separated again, forming the Diocese of Gurghiu. By highlighting the biographies of certain priests, the author discusses the influences of the governmental politics on the everyday life of the diocese, with parishes being formed or depopulated, or with churches being constructed or occupied by other confessions. The second part of the paper analyzes the ecclesiastical society of the diocese. It underlines the differences between the social reputation of the priests and that of the teachers, reflects on the relationship between them, and reconstructs certain models of ecclesiastical carriers from the pre-modern Transylvania as well. The author points out the most important culture generating institutions – reformed colleges from inside, and universities from outside the country –, that had a major influence on the shaping of the local clerical intelligentsia. It also details the migration of the clericals both in and outside of the diocese, presents statistical data, that are compared with similar data from the Reformed Diocese of Târnava (Küküllő).
