Sociology At The University Of Novi Sad: Institutional Development And Institutional Obstacles

Summary/Abstract: In this paper the institutional development of sociology at the University of Novi Sad is analyzed. It is understood as one of the factors of “difficult” sociological professionalization in this part of the Serbian society. Using empirical evidence, the author supports the basic thesis, which says that the institutional development of soci- ology in this part of the Serbian society is late for almost two decades, when compared with other university centers of the Serbian (ex Yugoslav) society, because of the obstacles produced by specific ideological-political circumstances. The paper presents plenty of data that show how these obstacles were overcome at the University itself (and its faculties and higher schools in the Serbian autonomous province of Vojvodina), and how the Department of Sociology was formed at the Faculty of Philosophy. The paper is a contribution to 50th anniversary of institutionalization of sociology in Serbia.
