On Desacralization of Visuality

Summary/Abstract: Modernity, as domination of visuality, normally is signified by invention of photography and cinema in 19th century. However, „visual turn“ in Western Europe began much earlier. One of the most important components of such transformation is theatre. Greek and Roman Theatre, essentially, allways maintained primordial aspect of sacredness. But in Baroque Theatre is observed strong moment of desacralization which indicates transformations in the form of tragedy (disappearance of transcendence, themes of secular history, theatre‘s repertoire as reproduction). The article compares Ancient Tragedy and Baroque Trauerspiel, and their relationship with endangered the sacred dimension of modernity.
