Summary/Abstract: The author presents a brief history of the notions frontiers and boundaries closely related to the goal of territorial control and the need for identity self-definition. It also underlines how the increase in commercial exchanges at world level questions the old geographic, linguistic and cultural divisions. The study refers to a long period of time, from the Middle Ages to the Cold War, and highlights the changing relations between the goal of individualization through borders, on the one hand, and the concern that they do not affect the international economic relations, on the other hand.
